But Nothing More
Looking at Old Mac's military record
with a nod to Gilbert & Sullivan's "H.M.S. Pinafore"

When Mac was a lad, his Daddy made
The move up to Lieutenant Junior grade.
The move to Junior grade became a stepping stone
To captaning a naval vessel on his own.
A role he found would be a prime requirement for
Old Mac to be a candidate, but nothing more.

Though Mac wished to match his Daddy's mark
He chose to treat Annapolis as a lark,
A lark that left him near the bottom of his class.
To get him into flight school Daddy kicked more ass.
And again when Mac crashed off the Texas shore,
A future candidate perhaps, but nothing more.

Crashing planes he proved to be quite expert at.
With Daddy pulling strings? Reprimands, old hat.
Experience for him militarily
Was getting himself rescued from the deep blue sea.
They thought they'd cut their losses; shipped him off to war,
A future candidate perhaps, but nothing more.

But while incinerating folks in Old Hanoi,
A SAM caught up with Admiral Daddy's golden boy.
The golden boy who siezed the opportunity
To decline his card for getting out of jail for free,
An action so heroic that it won the war!
Or was it just a footnote, and nothing more?

Whatever. It's a mantra they repeat ad infinitum
Until there's now an outside chance it could come back to bite 'em.
A hero now because of something that he didn't do?
Judged by earlier performances, I'm not surprised; are you?
Let's hope it's just a rumor so that hero some adore
Remains a third term candidate, but nothing more.
