The Big Blast?
(Or slow smoldering for years?)

How long will they smolder or will they detonate in a flash?
When they explode will they leave a big gash
In the retaining walls of the settling ponds?
That's one way to get rid of them, if you lack magic wands.

Wall Street approves. Leave no trace when you're gone,
No liabilities that drag on and on.
One major ka-boom and they're all out of there
Leaving Harper's "authorities" to stand back and stare.

Tar sands seemed sustainable to a select few,
Who sat on their hands admiring the goo
And their petrodollars, exchanging their souls
For a series of humongous, gargantuan holes.

Now in a flash they are left with a gash.
Did they or the industry opt to do something rash?
In an era of fear, of the terror syndrome,
All it required was a quick cell call from home.

Untraceable, too. The NSA'll never know.
Ed Snowden is gone and can't report on the blow.
Booze Allen Hamilton? Nothing to fear.
They'll collect their fees and be gone for a year.

Tar sands authorities have all had their fun.
All they need to do now is take their money and run.
Upgrader alley is gone. There is nothing left that can leak.
They can move back to Kuwait and the life of a sheik.
