Great Lengths

To what great lengths will George Bush go
when all those polls begin to show
that he and Cheney soon will be evicted?
Most agree that they'd do better
adhering strictly to the letter of the law
instead of angling not to be convicted.

So what will be their first reaction?
   Attacks against each rebel faction
regardless of the cost in human lives?
TV pundits thought they'd wait
   until Scalia's new mandate
   resulted in unlimited high fives.

But now they'll blame it all on Gallop
and the need to keep morale up
   after Democratic accusations.
Suppose that doesn't do the job,
their Saudi pals will turn the knob
and profit by our increased allocations.

Should they conclude that they can't win,
they'll want to do John Kerry in,
but how will they decide who is to blame?
They don't know where Osama is;
   Saddam's already gotten his.
Why couldn't Novak be the one they frame?

Yet "Stuff happens", Rummy says,
   even to a sitting prez,
and exit polls could be the final straw.
If that's the case their second choice,
so theirs remains the only voice,
you'll see will be declaring martial law.
